Personal Statement
Welcome!
I am currently an Engineering Science student at the University of Toronto. Before I entered this program, I was unaware of the true nature of engineering; however, within my second week of engineering I was immediately exposed to the concept and practice of engineering design. Throughout the past eight months, I have been involved in reverse-engineering exercises, two bridge-design exercises, and a semester-long product design, all of which were part of the following courses: CIV102, Praxis I, and Praxis II. As I took part in each design activity, I discovered my strengths in the following areas: finding credible research to support and generate design ideas and details, analyzing potential solutions against a list of criteria and constraints to determine the optimal design, and beginning every design project with a well-defined objective.
This portfolio provides an insight into the personal engineering design process I have developed over the past few months, and gives reflections on some of the design activities I participated in and their relation to my design process. Each of these reflections contain artifacts, concrete examples such as reports, calculations, and pictures of my design activities throughout the school year. My goal for future development is that as I continue my career in engineering, I will improve in my ability to use creativity techniques to better generate more innovative solutions to problems, and acquire better ways to make contact with and use the input of stakeholders in the design process.
